Recruitment agencies

It is usually free to enrol with a recruitment agency which usually involves uploading your CV and portfolio to their website. Once you are on their database they can help you find a job. However, in the past recruitment agencies would not deal with junior vacancies as clients were unwilling to pay the fee for finding junior staff. Thankfully that seems to be changing now.

You may not get an instant response if you apply for a role as the agents are usually overwhelmed with CVs and portfolios on a daily basis. However, if you look at the sort of roles they deal with and get to know a few of the consultants by following them on LinkedIn or Instagram, then you can introduce yourself more personally. By doing this you have a better chance of them remembering you, reviewing your CV and trying to help you.

Recruitment consultants get paid by the clients to find the most suitable candidate for the job. If they don’t find the right person the agency doesn’t get paid, so there is pressure for the agency to find the person with the right combination of skills and experience. If you fit the criteria they are looking for, then they will contact you. While always being honest about your real skills and experience, it is also important to make yourself stand out and relevant to the roles they have.

Always send a correct and up to date CV with correct grammar and perfect spelling. Explain in a short message your current position, availability and the type of role you are looking for. You can also send a small sample portfolio, but don’t overdo it and make sure it’s not too long or larger than 5MB. Ensure your portfolio is well presented, graphically appealing with a cover page and back page, including your contact details. Always include high resolution images and check the grammar and spelling thoroughly.

In your cover letter / cover email, do not use ‘Dear Sir / Madam’ or ‘To whom it may concern’ as that will almost always ensure your application is deleted or ignored.

Address your message to them directly by name and always include your contact details clearly.
