KLC x UID Design Competition.
United in Design is thrilled to be partnering with KLC School of Design to launch an annual competition that seeks to spotlight and nurture emerging talent in the interior design industry. The competition appeals to design enthusiasts from Black, Asian or Ethnic Minority background with a desire to succeed as interior designers and an outstanding eye for creativity and originality. The winner will receive a sponsored place on a KLC Full or Part Time Certificate Residential Interior Design course starting in September 2021, whilst a One Week or Part Time Introductory Interior Design Short course will be given to the runner up.
We would like you to show us what you can do with the creative challenge we have put together specially for the competition. This is to give you the chance to showcase your talent and give us a real insight into your creative approach, spatial awareness, ability to problem solve and think outside the box.
The Brief
We would like you to imagine that a couple who are friends of yours, who know you have a good eye for interior design, have been in touch to ask you for some ideas for their apartment. They both work in the media world, travel a great deal and enjoy entertaining at home. Shortly before the pandemic, they moved to their new studio apartment which they have not had a chance to decorate or furnish properly as yet.
The apartment can be in any major city you choose and we would like you to put together a montage of images and/or sketches that would give an idea of the sort of style and atmosphere you think might suit your clients and the property. Tell us a bit about your thought process including what/who has inspired your design, together with your proposed sketched layout for the plan provided, which does not have to be to scale. What we are on the lookout for is outstanding creativity potential and original ideas rather than detailed, scale plans and very professional presentation.
Things to consider
The atmosphere of the space, creating a design that encapsulates the clients’ personality and needs
What is different about the space? What is the wow factor?
How colour, shapes, materials and light are used
The impact of sustainability and unique sourcing of furniture and accessories
Submissions
The closing time and date for entries to be uploaded as PDFs or Microsoft Office files, to the United in Design website by midnight on Sunday 16 May 2021 and should include:
Completed entry form downloaded below
A digital A3 page with the layout of the room showing the position of storage and furniture (this can be drawn directly on the plan we have given you, or shown as an overlay on the plan) and can include sketch visuals if you feel this will help put your ideas across
Digital A3 moodboard of furniture, materials and artwork that demonstrates the essence of your project in a vibrant and engaging way
Digital A4 summary describing your clients and the story of the thought process and inspirations behind your ideas
